the club is provided below:
As
the demand for membership at the existing military clubs
exceeded the available capacity,
The Naval and Military Club was founded in 1862
by a party of Army officers. The
nickname “The In & Out”
comes from the gate posts on the on the former clubhouse
at 94 Piccadilly,
which were marked "In" and "Out" in order to
direct taxis.
The Club is no longer restricted to
military officers and was one of the first to allow full
lady members. In
1999, the Club
moved to it’s current premises at No. 4 St James Square,
former home of Nancy Astor and facilities include 48
bedrooms, a gym and pool and well appointed courtyard.
Since 1977, The In & Out has also been home to
The Canning Club. Starting out as the Argentine Club, it
broadened it’s membership after the second world war to
include those with interests in all Latin American
countries and was
renamed after George Canning, British Foreign Secretary.
The Canning Club celebrated it’s centenary this
year.
